About Bankstown Poetry Slam

Who runs Bankstown Poetry Slam?

All of Bankstown Poetry Slam’s events, workshops and media are managed by a volunteer committee including Sara Mansour, Yasmine Lewis, and Bilal Hafda.

What is Bankstown Poetry Slam?

Bankstown Poetry Slam is a not-for-profit charity and community platform empowering people through spoken word. Founded in 2013, it’s the first regular poetry slam in Western Sydney and one of the largest in Australia. BPS also runs workshops, high school programs, and welcomes poets to perform at events.

Event Details

When is the next slam?

The slam is held on the last Tuesday of every month. Check out our social media pages for all the latest information!

Can I still come if I don’t want to perform?

Absolutely! The majority of audience members just come to enjoy the night and eat the watermelon.

Is there an age limit?

No. All ages are welcome to attend and perform.

Is there an entry fee?

No! For a time we did charge a small $5 entry fee, but the slam is back to being free for all, and with the generous support of our partners (and patrons!) we hope to keep it that way!

Performing at the Slam

How do I sign up to perform?

You can sign up on the night before the slam starts. Make sure you arrive before 6:30pm. Please note that signing up doesn’t guarantee you a performance spot. Fifteen performers are randomly drawn from a hat in a “lottery” style system.

Can I perform a piece with a backing track?

No. However, we are always on the look-out for musical performers to open our slams. Please email info@bankstownpoetryslam.com with details about your work.

How long can I perform for?

3 minutes max.

I performed at Bankstown Poetry Slam and would like to see the footage.

Due to resource limitations, we are unable to upload every video performed at Bankstown Poetry Slam. However, we can try our best to meet your request. Please email info@bankstownpoetryslam.com

…but what if I have a really good piece that goes over the time-limit?

No. Please be considerate of other performers and stick to the time-limit.

How does your poetry slam work?

On the night, participants who wish to perform put their names down on a sign-up sheet. Each performer has 3 minutes of original work and is scored by five randomly chosen audience judges. The highest and lowest scores are dropped, and the median of the remaining three determines the score. The top three performers win.

Workshops & Education

Do you run any public workshops?

We occasionally run workshops throughout the year. Please see Upcoming Events.

Can you run a workshop at my work or school?

Yes, we can craft workshops to suit any group. Please email us at info@bankstownpoetryslam.com with the details.

(Bankstown Poetry Slam also runs spoken-word and writing workshops open to all ages and can host them at schools or events.)

Bookings & Partnerships

I want to book a BPS poet for an event. Who do I speak to?
